SXSW in Photos

Friday, April 3rd, 2009

It’s been weeks since the insanity passed, and we’re still recovering from the influx of tourists and musicians to our fair city. We interviewed some stellar artists, snapped thousands of photos, and are still going through all the material. Here are just a few shots of that crazy week… click the band name for more photos.

St. Vincent Coming to Town

Thursday, April 2nd, 2009

St. Vincent

June in Austin is going to be rough on your sleep cycle, with summer entrenched and touring season in full swing. Seven big shows have already been announced for the month, and one we’re pretty darn excited about is St. Vincent. We caught a preview of a few tracks from her upcoming album, Actor, at her SXSW showcase, and are now impatiently awaiting the May 5th release date. And it definitely won’t hurt that Pattern Is Movement is supporting her on the tour. We first wrote about PIM when they were in town back in October, and can only reiterate that between St. Vincent’s rockin’ new material and their awesome live show, you don’t wanna miss either of them. They play the Mohawk, June 19.

(3/22/09) Monty’s Catch of the Day – Jean-Benoit Dunckel (Air)

Sunday, March 29th, 2009

Today I bring you the sounds of Jean-Benoit Dunckel, aka JB Dunckel, aka Darkel, aka half of the band Air. He has recently scored the soundtrack to a French comedy motion picture entitled, Cyprien, which is about a 35 year old virgin who stumbles upon a deodorant that causes women to lust after his body. Sounds pretty dumb and I wouldn’t expect too much from this film (or if it will even hit the U.S.). However, the soundtrack is pretty impressive and sounding pretty much like an Air album. Dunckel is no stranger to scoring a film, since it was the band Air that took on the music from Sofia Coppola’s The Virgin Suicides. On the Cyprien soundtrack, he does a nice job of blending electronic instrumental tracks with brand new songs with Dunckel’s ethereal voice. Today’s catch is entitled “Total Love Warrior Song”, and you can listen to a clip of it down below. Enjoy!

News Bits

Friday, March 27th, 2009

We’ve been really diggin’ the video (below) for Handsome Furs’ I’m Confused, which – as you’d expect from any video that includes zombie hipsters – basically rocks. It’s creepy, with a second or two of NSFW.

Speaking of zombies, Metric released Help, I’m Alive to lather fans into a drooling frenzy anticipating the release of Fantasies, which drops in less than two weeks. We’re particularly fond of the 1% Free remix, which you can stream via Hype Machine.

You may have heard that Spike Jonze has been working on a movie adaptation of beloved childhood classic book Where the Wild Things Are… did you know that Arcade Fire was tapped to do the soundtrack? The trailer came out a few days ago, and looks and sounds pretty much awesome.

(3/22/09) Monty’s Catch of the Day – Doves

Sunday, March 22nd, 2009

In my opinion, Doves are one of the best bands that have come together in the past 10 years (that list also includes Coldplay, and The Killers). Originally, they started out as an electronic/dance act under another name; however, the UK trio then decided to go another direction with their sound. The nice thing is that they still use a lot of that electronic flavor mixed with live guitars and drums. There first album, Lost Souls, was a masterpiece created with their biggest hit being “Catch the Sun”. They are now set to release their 4th studio album on April 7th, and hopefully this will be the fourth major treat from the band. Doves is composed of brothers Jez and Andy Williams, along with Jimi Goodwin, who can all three play every instrument they own. Today’s catch happens to be the title track of the album entitled, Kingdom of Rust. But seeing that this is more of an alternative rock song, I decided to give you the “Kingdom of Rust (Prins Thomas Diskomiks)”. Enjoy!
