NPR is streaming the entirety of St. Vincent’s new album Actor a full two weeks before it drops. We haven’t had much chance to listen, but what we’ve heard is stellar. Annie’s voice is at its charming best, and the lyrics contain her usual unexpected bite to balance out the instrumental delicacy. But her sweetness, always forefront, is broken also with an unexpected but welcome palate-cleansing punch of distorted guitar. Other than the two singles already out, the songs that immediately resonated were Neighbors, Marrow, and Just the Same But Brand New.

In other album news, the Pixies have a new album, apparently titled Minotaur, coming out June 15th, which excites us beyond measure…
ETA The Pixies’ Minotaur is actually a box set of all their studio albums, along with some other extra goodies. Not quite as awesome as new material, but very cool nevertheless.

The Lollapalooza lineup is out, and is – of course – a doozy. Just a few of the Chillville artist making an appearance include Depeche Mode, Thievery Corporation, Andrew Bird, Animal Collective, Fleet Foxes, Santigold, Lykke Li, and so many more it’s kinda ridiculous.

Grizzly Bear is playing a set Thursday of sxsw at Central Presbyterian Church (whose consistently stellar lineup may incite us to camp out there Wed-Sat).

And speaking of awesome people playing that venue during sxsw, Jason Lytle – ex-frontman for Grandaddy, if his name wasn’t ringing any bells – is playing there Friday, and has officially announced his work on a solo project.

In touring news, Black Moth Super Rainbow and School of Seven Bells are teaming up for a US tour that will bring them to Austin the very same week as Animal Collective! BMSR play the Mohawk on Tuesday, June 2, and Animal Collective hits Stubbs on the 5th.

Want some local news? The Octopus Project are playing two interesting shows in the next week. Saturday night they’re doing a DJ set at the Red River Flows East party at a warehouse on the east side, and next Wednesday they’ll be playing something a bit different at Alamo Drafthouse. You’ll want to buy tix for the Alamo gig asap, because with only two shows in one evening, it’s sure to sell out very quickly.

By now you’ve probably heard Get On Your Boots, the first single from U2’s upcoming album No Line On The Horizon. If you haven’t, get rockin’ here. Set for a March 3rd release in the US, No Line On The Horizon will be the Irish giants’ first album since 2004’s How to Dismantle An Atomic Bomb. This period between albums is the longest in the band’s history, and we’re excited to hear what they’ve cooked up in the last five years. With eleven solid studio albums under their belts to date, countless other compilations and offerings and plenty of Bono’s world-saving endeavors, nobody can deny U2 is a legendary force in music. Whether it be pop, electronica, rock or something else entirely that’s yet to come, my bet is that Bono, Edge, Adam and Larry nail it indefinitely.

1993’s Zooropa remains one of my favorite electronic albums and definitely my top U2 album. Like Pop, it’s another album where the smarty pants seem to have chosen a genre just for fun and outright “pwned” it so to speak. Then again, everything U2 produces seems to shine with this epic and lasting quality that drives fans wild again and again and makes the haters even angrier. It’s awesome. Nobody can touch these guys. If anyone in music has my vote for lifetime achievement – it’s U2. The new album contains eleven tracks, and the stunning cover artwork by Japanese artist and photographer Hiroshi Sugimoto is an image of the sea meeting the sky. Produced by Brian Eno, Danny Lanois and Steve Lillywhite, the album will be released in five formats just to make us fans crazier: standard format, digipak format, magazine format, box format and LP viynl. Learn more and preorder yours on the band’s website. Get on your boots!

2008 was a great year in entertainment: New Portishead, Santogold, Thievery Corporation… Not to mention The Dark Knight, The Fall and other awesome films that stormed our DVD collections. Now looking ahead, there are a few releases set for 2009 that I’m genuinely and proudly geekin’ out for in anticipation. On the top of the list is Spike Jonze’s film adaption of Maurice Sendak’s classic kid’s story:

This was hands down one of my favorite lil’ twisted stories from my littleness. And though there’s nothing worse than having Hollywood corrupt, exploit or plain ruin such a magical childhood treasure, I have faith that Jonze is going to do this one justice. The director is sharing ideas with the book’s author in taking the tale to screen, and there are some great actors on board, including Forest Whitaker, James Gandolfini, Catherine O’Hara and Paul Dano (Little Miss Sunshine, There Will Be Blood).

With a number of stellar music videos under his belt for acts like Bjork, The Beastie Boys, Weezer and Daft Punk, you can count on this film sounding as incredible as it looks. Jonze has enlisted the talent of former girlfriend, Karen O of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, to write nearly the entire soundtrack for the film. Umm… awesome?!

According to IMDB.com, the movie will hit theaters October 16, 2009. I’ll be there. Maybe even in a monster suit, covered in bells. Here are a few stills from the film, and some “leaked test footage” here on YouTube. (Does anyone else hear Beck in that clip?)

While you’re at it, check out Karen O’s sweet run with Adidas and Spike Jonze here. Also, Yeah Yeah Yeahs fans can count on a new YYY album this year, per the group’s blog.

Next in excitement… new Massive Attack in ‘09! The group’s highly-anticipated fifth studio album is rumored to see its release in the spring. According to red-lines.co.uk, the album once thought to be called Weather Underground will be a double-album. “LP5″ is now the working title of the record. Whatever the name, the album will be a follow-up to 2003’s 100th Window, and Collected, MA’s Best Of record, which was released in 2006. Various sources on the net mention collaborations with TV On The Radio frontman Tunde Adebimpe, Stephanie Dosen, Dot Allison, Gorillaz mastermind Damon Albarn, Horace Andy, Mike Patton and Liz Fraser of Cocteau Twins fame. Guess we’ll just have to wait and see. Whatever the formula of collaborators, Massive Attack always delivers magic. Fingers crossed that it’s sooner than later. “Let the wild rumpus start!”

On February 17th, Morrissey will be releasing his latest LP entitled Years of Refusal. He has signed with Lost Highway, which is more known for their list of country artists including Lyle Lovett and Willie Nelson. The first single off the album will be a little tune called “I’m Throwing My Arms Around Paris”, and is set to be released one week before the album drops. The most exciting part of this news is the fact that Morrissey will be launching a North American tour that runs through Austin on April 12 at The Bass Concert Hall. I saw Morrissey over a year ago at The Backyard, and in my opinion is one of those artist that everyone must see at least once. My guess is that the show will consist of mostly new tracks from the latest album, some classic solo hits, and a track or two from The Smiths catalogue.

Here is the track listing for the new LP.

Something is Squeezing My Skull

Mama Lay Softly on the Riverbed

Black Cloud

I’m Throwing My Arms Around Paris

All You Need is Me
