Interpol, St Vincent, Pitchfork

Saturday, March 7th, 2009

So, we hear:

-St Vincent has a new tune available for download called “The Strangers”, and first let fans know about it via her Twitter account. She’ll be singing during SXSW at Central Presbyterian Church on Wednesday and Antone’s Friday night.

-At least part of the 2009 Pitchfork Music Festival lineup has been announced, and includes Tortoise, Grizzly Bear, Vivian Girls, and the National, among others. Interestingly, for a few artists they plan on letting fans vote on songs for the setlist.

-Indie rock megalith Interpol is working on a new album! After a two-year hiatus, they announced via their website that they are back together and practicing new material (Rolling Stone).

Pnuma & Big Gigantic

Friday, March 6th, 2009

You’ve probably heard of the Pnuma Trio, right? If not, let us sum up: funky electronica mixed with driving live drums and bass. Well, on Saturday night two of the famous group were getting feet moving at the Parish. Big Gigantic, an unsigned group from Colorado – who, given their party-startin’ skillz probably won’t stay unsigned for long - kicked it off with a mix of laptops and live drums and saxophone.

News

Wednesday, March 4th, 2009

On our last jaunt through local music blog Famousish’s (try and say that three times fast!) electronic-&-dance-heavy site, the above video tied to the name Girl Talk caught our eye. He was writing about a new documentary concerning copywrite infringement, and the fact that really, everything about Girl Talk’s music is really, really illegal. The above vid is essentially a trailer for the documentary, which looks pretty interesting.

In deliciously hilarious musician gossip (that is actually true!), Flaming Lips frontman Wayne Coyne completely trashes the Arcade Fire in a recent Rolling Stone interview. More details via Pitchfork, and to whet your appetite:

They treated everybody in their vicinity like shit. I thought, “Who do they think they are?” I don’t know why people put up with it. I wouldn’t put up with it.

Party!

Monday, March 2nd, 2009

If you wanna get your party on before the official SXSW insanity starts, there are plenty of pre-shows to get your festivities started off right. Here are a few to think about attending.

Ume

Saturday the 14th is all about a kickass local lineup at the Mohawk: ATX Emerge is back! They threw last Fall’s ATX Converge (with Belaire, White Denim, Black Joe Lewis, and more), and their first Emerge party before SXSW last year. This year, the list of stellar local bands pretty much has us drooling: Belaire, Brazos, Freshmillions, Foot Patrol, Harlem, Sunset, Ume (pictured above), the White White Lights, and Zeale. Haven’t seen Freshmillions or Zeale before, but all the others have proven themselves completely awesome live. (RSVP here)

One of the biggest (and likely, most difficult to get into) shows is Tuesday night at Pangaea with the Decemberists and Gomez. It’s the IFC Crossroads party, and wristbands for it are only available the day before (that’s Monday the 16th) at Waterloo Records at 10am. You might wanna take a quick detour from work to grab them then, because they are not going to be around for long.

Check back for more later; you know we’ll keep you posted!

Fujiya, Miyagi

Sunday, March 1st, 2009

If you weren’t at Emo’s last night for Fujiya & Miyagi, you missed a killer show. The room was packed, the crowd was dancing, and both the indoor and outdoor stages were tearing it up.

First, Masonic played the outside stage.

Then, Project Jenny, Project Jan got everybody groovin’ inside.

Then, Fujiya & Miyagi! Their set (plus encore) was 16 songs, and they didn’t waste a second on talking. Set list at the bottom of the post.

A quick detour back outside to catch the tail-end of Schatzi’s set was necessary.

Then it was back inside, just in time to catch Fujiya & Miyagi getting the Project Jenny, Project Jan guys on stage for one last song.

After all that, it was back outside for Cruiserweight.

Older Radiohead Cover

Saturday, February 28th, 2009

This video has been floating around the internet for just about 9 months, and was even linked to by Thom Yorke on the Radiohead blog. It came about because of Radiohead’s remix challenges, and specifically for Nude. What’s it like? Well, in the words of the guy who created it:

Based on the lyric (and alternate title) “Big Ideas: Don’t get any” I grouped together a collection of old redundant hardware, and placed them in a situation where they’re trying their best to do something that they’re not exactly designed to do, and not quite getting there.

Very, very cool. Stumbled upon it again last night, and ended up watching it 2-3 times.

Upcoming Shows

Friday, February 27th, 2009

Tonight, choosing shows is going to be difficult. You’ve got the electronic option with our Chillville Presents Fujiya & Miyagi show at Emo’s, a groovy hip-hop choice with G. Love & Special Sauce at Stubbs, or a Bollywood dance party at Mohawk.

Saturday, two of the three members of the Pnuma Trio are going to be thowing a dubstep and electronic shindig at the Parish, whose sound system is going to be making the floor shake until late into the evening. If you’re still in a dancing mood after that, Vinyl Entertainment is putting on a late-night party at 501 Studios for the release of the Diagonals’ EP. The Ugly Beats are also playing, and with free beer and a party-til-dawn promise, this is gonna be the place to be if you’re out after 2 (though if you want to see the bands you should get there closer to midnight). RSVP on Do512.com for guaranteed entry.

Sunday, if you’re not headed to see the Pretenders at Stubbs, definitely make your way to the Mohawk for Brightblack Morning Light. This psychedelic folk duo makes some gorgeously mellow sounds that will be the perfect end to your weekend, and it’s an early show on the outside stage, so you can’t even complain that it’s a work night. No, really, we can’t recommend these guys enough.
