Stephen Moser: The Sequel

Sunday, April 13th, 2008

Chronicle Style Avatar and man about town Stephen Moser is one of my all-time favorite guests on Chillville. I was floored when I read that he had been diagnosed with terminal cancer and was forgoing treatment.  Stephen’s enthusiasm is contagious, even as he’s facing death.  Uplifting, sobering and entertaining all at once…this may be the most memorable hang in the history of the show.  Thanks to Carla McDonald for helping set this up. You can also read about all of the events to help and honor our friend.

Pies and Dolls — Evenings to Support and Honor Stephen Moser

Sunday, April 13th, 2008

Dear Friends,

We hope you’ll join us for three very special evenings to support and honor our beloved friend and Austin Chronicle columnist, Stephen Moser. On Tuesday, April 15, the downtown Alamo Ritz (320 E 6th Street) will present a special screening of one of Stephen’s all-time favorite films, VALLEY OF THE DOLLS. The screening will be emceed by one of Stephen’s great friends, interior designer extraordinaire, Joel Mozersky. Tickets are $10 and may be purchased online at www.originalalamo.com.  Attendees who wish to donate an additional $10 or more to the Stephen Moser Fund, which has been created to help provide care for Stephen, will also receive a “Climb the Highest Mountain” thank-you bag. As Anne Welles said, “You’ve got to climb to Mount Everest to reach the Valley of the Dolls.”) So channel your inner Neely O’Hara and join the fun.

The pre-show activities will start at 9:15pm and the film will begin at 9:45pm. At midnight, an after-party at Oilcan Harry’s (211 W 4th Street), in their private Sidebar, will feature karaoke with performances by the legendary Gretchen Phillips.

On Sunday, May 4, also at the Alamo Ritz, Chronicle food critic and author, Virginia Wood, will host a PIE SOCIAL and a special screening of another of Stephen’s favorite films, the Joan Crawford tour-de-force, MILDRED PIERCE.

As we all know, Mildred had quite a knack for making pies. The event will feature delectable pies for eating and auctioning donated by an array of Austin restaurants. For more information about the Pie Social, please visit www.originalalamo.com.

On Wednesday, May 14, Antone’s will host “Stephen is One in a Million!,” an incredible evening of celebration with music and auctions to honor Stephen. More details will be coming soon.

The above events are part of a series of initiatives that have been arranged by Stephen’s Angels, an informal group of Stephen’s family members and friends who have come together to show their love and support for Stephen. If you are unable to attend any of the above events, but would like to support Stephen, donations may be made through PayPal www.paypal.com (click on the Send Money page and use the address moserfund@gmail.com) or via Falcon Bank.

Thank you and we’ll see you on April 15!

iLL Prospekt at Lambert’s

Friday, April 11th, 2008

The name “iLL Prospekt” means sick perspective, according to the group’s MySpace, but if their perspective is sick, it is only in the newfangled definition: crazy, cool, insane. With synths and turntables, along with the more traditional accompaniment of guitar, bass and drums, iLL Prospekt crafts ambient noise into melody, mixing electronic sounds with chill drum beats, and samples with a solid bass backing.

But these guys are going for simplicity, rather than the dense layers of sound you may expect from their combination of instruments. Minimalist tracks abound, with meandering, translucent melodic lines. Samples never overpower when they make an appearance, only influence and inform the beat. Think of Air’s more delicate efforts and Ratatat’s synths for some small idea of their sound, and catch them at Lambert’s this Friday.
