July 8th Catch of the Day – Maps

Sunday, July 8th, 2007

You know it’s been awhile since I have heard a new refreshing sound that cannot be compared to anyone else. I have been on the lookout for a new Massive Attack, Radiohead, or Zero 7. Well, I think I may have found a band with that type of potential. Maps is the project fronted by James Chapman out of the UK. He has put together a wonderful debut album, We Can Create, in his bedroom using a 16-track and without the use of computers. The product is one of the finest debut albums I have heard in a long time. The sound mixes elements of folk, atmospheric electronics, and original beats. There are songs that will put you in “chill mode” for most of the album, and then there are moments that take you to a darker side. I am very excited to bring you my catch, which is “It Will Find You”. I highly recommend going to Itunes and downloading the entire album.

John Pierson and Janet Pierson

Sunday, July 1st, 2007

John Pierson and Janet Pierson have been intimately involved in the production of the careers of some of the great filmmakers of our time, including Spike Lee, Michael Moore and Austin’s own Rick Linklater. Their appearance was one of our great “hangs” to date on Chillville as they discussed all of the above, and what happened when they uprooted and moved to Fiji to run a free movie theatre (all of which was documented in the film Reel Paradise).

July 1st Catch of the Day – Flunk

Sunday, July 1st, 2007

The Norwegian band is back with their latest album, Personal Stereo, which is a “must have” for this year. Ray was the one who actually turned me on to this band with the single, “Play”. I absolutely love the smooth electronic sound that is mixed well with vocalists Anja Oyen Vister’s angelic voice. Today’s catch is “Haldi”, which definitely stands out on the new LP.
